Mt Sinai and St Catherines Monastery
This is one of the great
walks (some would say climbs) that mere mortals, without a previous history of
'climbing', can do. In addition it visits the peak accepted by many sectors of
the Christian and Jewish religions as being where Moses received the 10
commandments. It requires a steep ascent pre-dawn and naturally 'what goes up
must come down'. People of all ages and fitness levels do attempt and succeed
with this walk. We have posted a larger number of pictures on this page to
ensure as many people see the terrain, the climb and the reason for the hike.
At the base of the climb is the famed Orthodox Monastery of St Catherines (c
700AD). At the conclusion of the climb there is time to explore this building
which aside from being a practising monastery is built around the supposed
'burning bush' of the Old Testament.
