Our travel plans are designed to be flexible and cater for non aircraft enthusiast partners as well. The following information is designed to give you a starting point for your travel to New Zealand.

Warbirds and Us

2004_poliform.jpg (35181 bytes)Warbirds Over Wanaka has become the leading airshow in the Southern Hemisphere attracting not only local visitors from New Zealand and Australia, but ever increasing numbers from Europe and North America. Many attributes combine to make this such a popular event with obviously aircraft type and quality of the flying displays being the decisive factor. In addition, there is the natural ‘amphitheatre’ nature of the airfield with its backdrop of magnificent snowcapped mountains. For those in Australia reading this you might have seen the TV ad for ‘Cold Ice Beer’ – the one with the MIG15. That was filmed in the area. Add to all this the other natural wonders of New Zealand – including a few good aviation museums – and you have a total package of excitement, history, scenery and culture.

At Passport Travel have an above average knowledge of New Zealand. We have New Zealanders in the business and our Australian born staff have visited New Zealand many times. The New Zealand Tourism Board appointed us as a KEA (Kiwi Expert Agent) agent, their official accreditation mark. Passport Travel has been awarded KEA Agency of the Year on more than one occasion. When we say we will give you a personalised itinerary we mean it.

Our mixture of accommodation and selection of cars and campervans mean you can enjoy this great event in comfort and with the flexibility required. This flexibility allows you to enjoy some of the other natural attractions New Zealand has to offer along with other places of aeronautical interest.

We are an official Australian representative for Maui campervan for the Warbirds over Wanaka airshow. Your reservation with us ensures you receive your added bonuses!

What airshow passport offers

Wanaka Region

Wanaka township is situated on the shores of Lake Wanaka, a large lake set amongst some of the greatest alpine scenery in New Zealand. The lake is a mecca for New Zealand holiday makers and has a large number of ‘holiday homes’. During the winter Wanaka is an international ski resort region. There are a wide range of activities for both the aviation enthusiast and a non aviation partner. Wanaka provides access to the Mt Aspiring National Park and its stunning alpine. Arrowtown is 1hour away and Queenstown a further 15 minutes. The airfield, where the airshow is held, is 12km east of the township of Wanaka. The small ‘village’ of Luggate is a further 2.5km east and Cromwell is 30 minutes drive east from the airfield.

Campervan hire = comfy camping and convenience

Campervans are one of the most popular methods to visit this airshow. The convenience of having your vehicle and home as one, means that you can stop virtually anywhere in New Zealand, prepare a meal or snack and stay the night. Campervans today are well designed with all facilities to ensure a comfortable stay. They are ‘walk in walk out’ as far as equipment and bedding is concerned and have an on board toilet and shower (unless otherwise stated).

We offer vans from more than one supplier. Please review all as there are some differences.

General Accommodation

Hotel and Motel

Take the link via picture to the left to our web based accommodation booking system. You can then search and book live. If you do not find anything, or would like to have one of us do this for you then call, or email us. For all airshow accommodation enquiries where you require us to find hotel or motel rooms we will require an initial deposit of $45. Should you go ahead with what we find this will contribute to the final total cost. If you do not go ahead then we will retain this as a service fee.

Holiday House Rental

For all the comforts of home whether it is for one of you or a whole tribe, renting a house may be the answer. We have access to a range of properties that vary in size, capacity. All are of a VERY GOOD standard, some are more opulent and this is reflected in their price. They are situated in and around the township of Wanaka and are offered on a ‘walk in walk out’ basis. These are holiday or permanent homes so the owners decide to ‘make hay while the planes fly’, and move out. We cannot publish a full list here as it changes all the time. Some examples are as follows;

Minimum of 4 nights

House that sleeps 4 persons From AU$300 + per person for 4 nights.
House that sleeps 6 persons From AU$280 + per person for 4 nights.
House that sleeps 8 persons From AU$260 + per person for 4 nights.

Camp Grounds

We can access powered sites when you rent a campervan via us. Wanaka central and Wanaka lake shore offer powered sites and are 14km and 17km respectively from the airfield.

The ‘Luggate’ site offers unpowered sites and is 2.5km form the airfield. This site is the local cricket oval although there are the ‘changing room’ facilities it is best to use your on board equipment. First in first served for this one!
