Aerobatic Aircraft and Lamborghini Race

The world famous biennial airshow, held at Lake Wanaka, has been operating since 1988 and is the largest of its type in the Southern Hemisphere, being well known on the international circuit. Known as, “Warbirds Over Wanaka’ the show features more than historical military aircraft. The event is packed with everything from examples of early aviation (Pre WW1) through early passenger aircraft, gliders, aerobatics, helicopters to modern private aircraft. There are also static displays of cars, tractors, re-enactors and occasionally steam.

The airports position is like no other and forms the most stunning natural stage and a backdrop without rival.

A star attraction at this year was the race between Jurgis Kairy in his Sukhoi 29 and Greg Murphy in his Lamborgini. Jurgis is a 62 year old (amazing he is still alive!) world champion unlimited aerobatics man. There is a famous youtube clip of him flying his aircraft upside down UNDER the bridges of Budapest’s Buda River!!
