Travel Technology

In to days 'green Travel' world will the following eventuate?

In a report by
The Guardian, UK-based Reaction Engines has unveiled its designs for a hypersonic passenger jet with the ability to fly from Europe to Australia in less than five hours.

Flying at 3000mph (4828km/h), the A2 combines commercial aircraft features with space travel technology. The A2 is run on liquid hydrogen and produces water vapour and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) as opposed to carbon emissions. Capable of carrying 300 passengers, the estimated cost of the flight would be similar to a current first class fare.

According to Senior Engineer and Managing Director, Alan Bond, the A2 could arrive on our shores within 25 years.

“The A2 is designed to leave Brussels international airport, fly quietly and subsonically out into the north Atlantic at mach 0.9 before reaching mach 5 across the North Pole and heading over the Pacific to Australia,” he said.

“Our work shows that it is possible technically; now it’s up to the world to decide if it wants it,” Bond added.

Morse Makes a Comeback!

Have you heard? Morse code, originally developed 175 years ago is coming back - in mobile phones!

Mobile phone developers plan to include a Morse code application into its handsets as a faster option than SMS.

While pushed to the background by more sophisticated options, Morse has never "gone away" and in December 2003, was upgraded for the first time since 1945, to include the @ symbol.

Claim Back a portion of Your Fuel Taxes!

Thousands of Australian residents will have the opportunity to claim back one-third of any fuel surcharges paid on British Airways or Virgin Atlantic flights from August 2004 to March 2006. Members of BA’s Executive Club and Virgin’s Flying Club frequent flyer schemes, of which an estimated 20,000 reside in Australia, were mailed. A settlement claim form from Washington, DC-based class action specialists Epiq Systems, which is pursuing the case through Californian courts.

The letter, from settlement administrator Kenneth Feinburg sets out the terms of any refund. Affected passengers can also lodge a claim online at www.airpassengerrefund.com In a reverse to the Australian fuel surcharge case involving travel agents, individual passengers have the option of opting in or objecting to the settlement. All others forfeit their right to claim refunds.

Feinburg says passengers on BA or Virgin long-haul flights between August 11, 2004 and March 23, 2006 are entitled to claim 33.3 per cent of the fuel surcharge back. The claim forms are the result of a proposed settlement in the US class action on fuel surcharges, and are likely to bolster the cause of the class action claimants here. BA and Virgin could have to refund as much as $US60 million and £73.5 million as a result of the settlement. Neither BA nor Virgin’s Australian offices were able to comment on the letters.

Michelangelo’s iconic statue of David in danger of crumbling due to effects of mass tourism, the BBC has reported Italian experts as saying.
