The Coffee Page

At time permits, and correspondents file reports, we will compile notes pertinent to travel and coffee. Lets face it we all frequent a 'Coffee Bar/Cafe' somewhere on our travels, even to have a 'cup of tea'! If you are interested in a group tour looking at the history of and visiting the historical cafe's of Europe then visit our tour page.

WHO DOES WHAT

A man and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the coffee each morning. The wife said, "You should do it, because you get up first, and then we don't have to wait as long to get our coffee." The husband said, " You are in charge of cooking around here and you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee." Wife replies, "No, you should do it, and besides, it is in the Bible that the man should do the coffee." Husband replies, "I can't believe that, show me." So she fetched the Bible, and opened the New Testament and showed him at the top of several pages, that it indeed says........ "HEBREWS"

LUGANO - Switzerland - Ticino region. Swiss Italian sector.

If you happen to visit this city then the "Great Cafe" is an exquisite place. A simple coffee will drain $5 from your pocket and a 'cake' a further $13.30, but what a building and such a central position. Note under the history section the significance of the listed room on the first floor.

In March 1945, while the venue operated as usual, in the "Cenacolo" room on the first floor the secret, high-level meeting was held between German and Allied officials at which the foundations were laid for the surrender signed at Caserta on 2 May 1945. The bloody war was finally over, saving northern Italy from untold suffering as well as from the immense destruction that a "scorched earth" policy would have caused.

St Petersburg is a vibrant cafe city. It doesn't matter if you are there winter, or summer there is always a cafe worth consuming some of your time at. We have a small selection and welcome feedback from you

How to order your coffee in Vienna
Sit elegantly perched in a cosy window seat of a Viennese coffee house and be at ease with the sophisticated coffee culture, trying some coffees you won't get anywhere else

The majority of the 4.000 coffee houses in Austria can be found in Vienna, as it is the place where coffee was originally introduced by the Turks. (In 1983 the institution “coffee house” celebrated its 300th anniversery.)

Compared with coffee houses in other European cities you will experience this cultivation of an institution especially in Vienna.

Some vocabulary to make sure you order the right coffee here are some of the classics:

Grosser/Kleiner Schwarzer ...double/single black coffee
Grosser/Kleiner Brauner...double/single white coffee (with milk)
Verlängerter Schwarzer ...lighter coffee without milk
Verlängerter Brauner ...lighter coffee with milk
Einspänner “Schwarzer”, served in a glass with whipped cream
Melange ...hot milk froth on top, sprinkled with chocolate powder

And last but not least to call the waiter the right adress is "Herr Ober!" (Waiter!) or "Fraeulein! (Waitress!) and he or she will serve with typical Viennese charm.
