Airlines are going to amazing
lengths to improve fuel efficiency |
|
|
Airlines are
trying every tactic to lighten their load and reduce their fuel
bills, a Times of London article said. It said in an industry where
every gram counted, carriers were adopting increasingly innovative
measures to cut weight, adding to measures which they have already
adopted – like cutting routes and grounding aircraft. British
Airways is reducing the weight of passenger meals, replacing
catering trolleys and scrapping cabin crew paperwork. Others are
removing earplugs, cutting back on sachets and even shaving
millimetres off cutlery. Virgin Atlantic, for example, is reducing
the weight of meals by cutting down on packaging, the report said.
The carrier has already removed the Clingfi lm from bread rolls and
eventually wants to develop a packageless meal. The Times said
Emirates was looking to replace all in-fl ight printed material with
onscreen electronic information. All Nippon Airways (ANA) has
introduced lighter porcelain for first and business classes and
Japan Airlines has slimmed the handles of its forks and spoons,
reducing their weight by 2g each, the report said. Paul Charles,
spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic, was quoted saying: “When you add
it all up for every fl ight each year, it does matter. Basically,
you need less fuel to power a flight if it is lighter. It works
wonders.” |

Protect your Laptop when
travelling! |
|

Study
says that more than 637,000 notebooks vanish each year in mid-to-large
airports.
A
report by ZDNet USA says as we prepare to hit the road, trudge through
airport security and snag that car rental, spare a thought for the
valuable data that travels with you on that trusty old laptop. According
to a recent study by the Ponemon Institute, more than 637,000 notebooks
vanish each year in mid-to-large airports. With some help from Microsoft
ZDNet USA has put together a list of instructions on how to encrypt
files or folders in Windows XP and Windows Vista. If you are travelling
through a US airport, you already know about having to remove your
laptop from your bag to go through the security scanner.
How to encrypt data
on your laptop
In addition to encryption, which ZDNet highly recommends, be sure to
protect your laptop with a strong password and back up your information
before hitting the road
Richard Stiennon has
some really good advice on how to make sure you don’t
misplace your laptop in the midst of trying to find your shoes, belt and
mobile phone:
** Place your laptop in the first bin you put on the belt of the X-ray
machine.
** You should put your laptop bag in front of it.
** Put the bin with your shoes, belt, purse, wallet, etc. right behind
your laptop.
** And your carry-on bag last.
** The first thing you should do on the other side is put your laptop in
its bag before the other luggage crashes into it and dumps it on the
floor.
** Your other stuff separates it from the person behind you and in front
of you.
** Mark your laptop!
** Put a sticker on it. People hate to do this, but you should identify
your laptop in such a way that you can quickly identify it. There are
lots of Dell computers our there.
** DO NOT TAPE YOUR BUSINESS CARD TO YOUR LAPTOP.
** Do not become a target by letting potential laptop thieves know just
how valuable your laptop may be.
If you lose your laptop take action immediatley - in 99% of the cases
you can get it back. |
