Phileas Fogg Round the World in 80 Drinks
– London Clubs
|Add a dash of literary
legend and you have the right combination for a bar, food and
entertainment venues with a difference This unsuspecting bar in
Mayfair is styled in the period in which Phileas Fogg set off around
the world – you know, ‘Round the World in 80 Days’. The quirky décor
is undeniably charming and plays home to a menu of exotic
concoctions, greeting the most discerning of connoisseurs... to a
true gentleman’s drink.
Step inside the doors at 15 Bruton Lane in Mayfair, and you may just think you’ve stepped inside a museum dedicated to some Victorian explorer. But in fact, what you’d be stepping into is the imaginary home of the fictional character Mr. Phileas Fogg – the chief protagonist in Jules Verne’s 1873 novel Around the World in Eighty Days.
ecorated with all his imaginary souvenirs, including hunting rifles, stuffed animals, weathered flags and maps, it’s the extensive, 80-strong cocktail list inspired by Fogg’s gallivanting around the globe that really steals the show. Rum-based The Navigator and gin-based Jungle Sling come highly recommended by the man himself.
This won’t be a budget place – its real estate position signals this. However, compared to the Herculean task of obtaining membership to a ‘London Club’ in this area this is a cheap way to ‘imagine’ a time that many of us wish we could ‘pop’ back in a time machine for a ‘quick peek’.
This writer used to work as a luggage porter at a rather esteemed hotel in the area, so is familiar with the region. Berkley Square is nearby – you may hear a Nightingale sing? The WW2 headquarters of MI5 are also there, for the serious history buff. A bar to add to your list!!
